Activities

Being active ourselves, we thoroughly
enjoy the abundance of activities available in Lagos. There are
plenty to appeal to the various interests and preferences of her
visitors. A few of these activities have become our favourites and
our pleasure to share with our frequent guests to Lagos. There is
nothing better for us, than bringing along new visitors to Lagos
on each of our visits to savour this experience.
We just can't get enough of our favourite activities
..so,
don't miss them!

Lagos Old Town Highlights
You really must devote a day to roaming around the old town. There is an abundance of historical sites and intricate architecture. The endless pedestrian streets with outdoor restaurants and coffee shops, and of course the boutique shops are sure to round out your day. To really absorb the best of Lagos history, we recommend purchasing a good history book devoted to Lagos, as we are not historians. Our favourite highlights of Lagos give you our perspective on "must see" attractions in the old town.

Tips
1) Lagos is a hilly town, so bring your walking shoes to avoid unnecessary pain.
2) Arm yourself with our detailed Lagos Old Town Map to help you navigate the old town
3) Larger Old Town Maps are available at the tourist office; "Free Maps" are available at several shops, restaurants and real estate agencies; excellent town maps are available for purchase at most newspaper kiosks for a reasonable fee (our favourite is the "ForWays" Lagos map)
4) We recommend driving into town as you will get a good workout from this day of walking and may not be prepared for the walk back uphill to our apartments at the end of the day.
: Parking can be tricky in the town waterfront area. Try finding a space along the endless pay parking spots that border the waterfront boardwalk along the main road. You may need to drive up and down a few times until you find someone pulling out. Alternately you can use the pay parking lot that is directly across the road from the waterfront boardwalk, between the old town wall and the Post Office. The entrance to this lot is beside the intriguing marble plaza with the statue of Henry the Navigator. The charges are minimal, but just remember to pay the attendant before you leave and drive to the exit gate!.
Igreja de Santo António & Town Museum
Church Features: Plain on the outside and astonishingly impressive inside; church explodes with the brilliance of the glided ornate wood carvings while contrasted with the colourful painted stucco dome ceilings; a variety of cherubs peep at you from the gilded work ensuring that you take notice; azulejo (tile) panels of blue and white form a type of wainscoting around the interior church walls; it really is a mesmerizing feeling.
Museum Features: A little taste of history as you take a walk back in time; archeological findings; religious robes; international coins dating back to 300 AD; unique currencies for each municipality; fishing and farming equipment; sea shells and minerals; assorted weapons; artwork
Pricing: Approx. 2.00€ entrance fee; well worth the visit
When: 9:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:00; Tuesday to Sunday; Closed Mondays
: From the Town Waterfront, you see the Igreja Santa Maria just behind and to the left of the statue of Henry the Navigator; Igreja de Santo Antonio is one block up the hill from Igreja Santa Maria; you cannot miss it as the steeples of both churches are visible from one another.
Slave Market
Features: A darker representation of Portugal's past, once housed Europe's first black slave market; now serves as an art gallery presenting a rotation of local artists from across the Algarve; we have seen some very impressive displays at our every visit.
Pricing: No entrance fee; bring your wallet if you would like to shop
When: 9:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:00; Monday to Saturday; Closed Sundays
: From the Town Waterfront, look for Praça da República, across from Igreja Santa Maria
Grotto
Tour, Lagos
  If
this is your first visit to Lagos, you simply must take a "grotto
tour". Step into a small fishing boat, let your local fisherman
be your guide, and witness from the water, the distinctive and magnificent
cliffs that surround the Lagos area. It is truly a sight unseen!
Your guide will navigate around and under the intriguing rock formations,
take you into caves and point out
the many secluded beaches that surround the town.
Take lots of film, because if you're lucky you might see the "Titanic"
and Lagos' only resident "Elephant" and even the "Easter
Island" runaway. Notice the tiny secluded beach coves, only
accessible by boat, along your tour.

Portuguese is the language spoken on the tour which creates an
interesting atmosphere, as the fisherman points out the highlights!
You
can take the grotto tour by signing-up with one of the vendors along
marble sidewalk in front of town. Alternatively, catch a boat at
Praia Dona Ana or at Ponte da Piedad. This tour offers a little
variety to your beach day. The fisherman bring the boats right to
the beach, and you can generally get a good rate here.
Tip:
Take your Grotto tour early in your visit as soon as you have
a day with calm waters. Waiting too long may result in a missed
opportunity if the wind picks up towards the end of your trip.
Price:
Approx.€12 to €25 per person, based on your
starting point
Cliff
Walk, Lagos
The
many beaches in Lagos are surrounded by a great network of paths
that take you along the edges of the spectacular cliffs. You will enjoy this unique opportunity to feast your eyes over some of the most dramatic vistas overlooking the Atlantic.
To add
some variety to your beach day, take
a walk earlier or later in the day when the sun is not so strong.
Stop along the cliffs to absorb the beautiful scenery while listening
to the soothing sounds of the ocean. Some of the secluded beach
coves along the way have stairs leading you down to beach level.

Tips:
1)
Walk with care!! Rain and wind are constantly eroding the
edges of the cliffs, so don't get too close to the edge. Also, please
respect nature and do not alter the terrain by digging or removing
vegetation. The cliffs are precious and we all want to be able to
enjoy them for many years to come.
2)
Load up on the sunscreen and wear a hat. Take your sunscreen and
a bottle of water with you. Don't underestimate the powerful Portugal
sun and ruin your holiday with a sunburn.
Beach Day (Dia de Praia)
One of the best ways to spend a warm day in Lagos is on one of the many beaches ("praias" in Portuguese) along the town coastline. There are several beaches within walking distance from our apartments, so pack a picnic lunch, grab your map and make it a day of beach-hopping. It's a great way to slow down and to revitalize your spirit.
Tip: Take loads of sunscreen, a big beach blanket and a beach umbrella or two, as the sun is oh so strong!
Praia Porto do Mõs, Lagos
Our favourite - Praia Porto de Mõs is at the far end of the town. We love it because of its long and wide open expanse, surrounded by stunning cliff views and crashing surf to play in. It's a great spot for body surfing or tossing a Frisbee or football. This long stretch make Porto do Mõs ideal for a long beach walk. We always find a nice quiet spot to spread out our blanket, read a book or people-watch or just gaze out and the ocean in meditation. It's amazing how the view and the sound of the surf can soothe the soul! If you did not manage to stuff a beach blanket in your suitcase and your preference is to soak in the sun on lounge chairs, you can rent them on the beach. Just look out for a sun-drenched attendant who will happily set you up.

Campo do Mar is an ideal beach side restaurant bar at Porto do Mõs, for a meal or snack at any time of day. We like to enjoy a glass of port at sundown while listening to the waves crash to the shore. This is a great spot on both a sunny or rainy day, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

Porto do Mõs, is a popular spot for the locals on a Sunday afternoon, so if you would like a seat in the restaurant, get there early!
Tip: The beach is at street level. If you are not up for the long staircases that provide access to some of the other beaches, then Porto do Mõs is the beach for you.
: See Walking Tour #1 Praia Porto de Mõs for directions and additional photos.
: Plenty of parking available at the beach entrance.
Walking time from Dona Ana (DA) Apartment: 20 min.
Praia Dona Ana, Lagos

Praia Dona Ana is another great beach, and probably one of the most popular in the area. If you like lots of people around, and towering cliffs surrounding you, then this may be your beach! The close proximity of the cliffs offer a little more shade than some of the other beaches.
A convenient and seemingly endless staircase takes you to and from the beach, offering a great workout. There are a couple of cliff side restaurants for a light lunch. Be prepared to pay for this ideal location.
: See Walking Tour #2 Praia Dona Ana for directions and additional photos.
: Plenty of parking in designated parking spots at street level just above the beach. Parking can easily fill up in peak season and it may be advantageous to walk to the beach instead.
Walking time from Dona Ana (DA) Apartment: 5 min.
Praia do Camilo, Lagos
Praia do Camilo is a secluded little beach cove on the road to Ponte de Piedad. Look for it on the left. If you arrive really early at 8 am, you may have the beach to your self for an hour, until the other sunseekers arrive.
The beauty of this beach lies in its crystal clear waters and picturesque cliff formations that create this little jewel. From one beach you can walk through a tunnel in the rock to reach another like beach. You will notice the fisherman passing by as they take visitors on the Grotto boat tours.
The shallow rocky ocean floor attracts interesting marine life and is a great spot for snorkeling. This beach tends to be nicely sheltered from the winds on most days, which also provides for calmer waters.
The views from the cliffs here are simply astonishing. This is another good spot to embark on a cliff walk. At parking level, notice the farmer with his property fenced off with a health pig population.

Tips:
1) The beach has an extremely long but staggered stair case to navigate from the parking lot to beach level. Before you venture down, ensure that you have the capacity to make it back up at the end of a sundrenched day
2) Try Restaurant do Camilo, conveniently situated on top of the beach for a light lunch snack or for some great seafood, cooked to perfection.
: See Walking Tour #2 Praia Dona Ana for directions and additional photos.
: You can park on the street all along the rectangular building or in the dirt parking lot across the street.
Walking time from Dona Ana (DA) Apartment: 10 min.
Praia do Pinhão, Lagos
The intimacy and charm of this tiny jewel of a beach cove, makes it a really nice alternative to the larger busier beaches. The cliffs tower around the beach and create shaded areas as the sun makes its way through the day.
The long staircase from the road to the beach provide you with a good days workout.

: See Walking Tour #4 Town Waterfront for directions.
: Just a few roadside opportunities for parking, so take a walk instead. It's worth it!
Walking time from Dona Ana (DA) Apartment: 10 min.
Meia Praia, Lagos
Meia Praia's, crescent shape frames an endless wide- opened 7 km stretch of beach making it a favourite with many regular visitors to Lagos. If you like a lot of space and water sports, then this beach is for you! There is more beach here than the average person can walk or jog.
The beach has a perimeter of long flowing green beach grass with narrow paths connecting you from the many parking lots to the beach. Meia Praia begins just behind the old fishing docks at the edge of town and continues on as far as the eye can see.
You must stop in at Bar Linda, the bustling beach-side bistro with a wide selection of goodies on its colourful menu, my favourite being the large exotic salads. You will find plenty of seating both inside and out. This is yet another great spot to people watch! See Eateries "Bar Linda" for more details.
From Meia Praia you can absorb the great view of Lagos. Bring your camera to enjoy the multitude of photo opportunities. If you can zoom in with your camera or binoculars to the coastline towards the Lagos centre, you will notice the road that you take to the Town Waterfront on Walking Tour #4.
: From Tulip roundabout #5, drive straight to Black Ball roundabout #4 and take your first right down the road towards the Town Waterfront. Drive on through town and past the Marina to the Ironworks roundabout #3. Turn right. At the next intersection and then turn right again. You will now be driving behind the Marina and will come upon Ancient Ruins roundabout #F. Take your first right and follow the road as it curves until you reach the Train Station parking lot on your left. Drive into the parking lot and follow the road which takes you parallel to the train tracks to the beach. This paved road turns into a dirt road as you near the beach. From here a number of dirt roads take you to several beachside restaurants.
: Loads of parking lots all along the beach.
Tips
1) Don't be intimidated by the tricky route to Meia Praia. Be brave and enjoy the adventurous drive and you will truly be rewarded!
2)Construction is now complete on the newly paved road which simplifies your route to from behind the Marina to the beach.
3) Our favourite beachside bistro was closed for renovation on our last trip in June. All beachside restaurants must now be constructed with wood, so many are under renovation and new ones are popping up. We did eat at one new beachside grill, but it did not make our favourites list.
Walking time: Don't bother..... it's best to drive to Meia Praia
Driving time from Dona Ana (DA) Apartment: 10 min.
Praia de Beliche, Beliche
Praia de Beliche is a more remote covy beach, offering an extended sandy base for a good stretch of water. It is popular with the surfers and can offer a range from large swells to super calm waters. We enjoy stopping here on the way back from a visit to Sagres, if the ocean looks calm. It may be windy at the top of the cliff, but the winds are cut off at beach level by the cliffs that embrace this tiny cove. This also make for a good day trip away from Lagos.
Yet another convenient and seemingly endless staircase takes you to and from the beach, offering a great workout.
: On the way to Sagres on your left, just after the Forteleza de Beliche, the old fortress.
: Sufficient parking in the dirt parking lot along side the road.
Driving time from Lagos: 30 min.
Parasailing, Lagos
Parasailing offers a breathtaking aerial view of the coast with spectacular scenery. This of course is if you are comfortable with and invigorated by heights.
Our recent client shared her experience: "It was a great experience and terrific scenery. It is very peaceful and not at all scary once you see someone else do it. Golf, Algarve (20+ courses)
If
you are a golf enthusiast, you will absolutely love the Algarve,
and the town of Lagos because of its proximity to a multitude of
great golf courses. The Algarve is renowned for its world-class
golf courses, most of which are open all year round. While many
courses require proof-of-handicap, there are also several courses
available to those only half as good as Tiger and Mike Weir!
Lagos
is a good home base for a golf holiday. A great selection of golf
courses lie within less than a 15 minute drive from Lagos.
Our
Golf Course Experiences
Penina: Penina
has become our favourite golf course, as it offers a selection of
three courses, based on your skill level. The staff at the pro-shop
are very friendly and courteous.
Boavista: We have golfed this challenging course; incredible
scenic views of Lagos (hence the name); very hilly so take an electric
cart; tee-off marshall was incredibly friendly; proshop staff seemed
preoccupied with their conversation and any conversation with us
was brief. We took advantage of a great low season special for €79
which included two 18 hole green fees and an electric cart.
High Season: February;
March; April; May; September; October; November
Low Season:
January; June; July; August; December
Tips:
1) June is our favourite time
to golf in Portugal and many courses offer specials. For Canadians,
the low season rates suit us perfectly. Given our long winters,
we long for spring and the hot summers and this is when we golf.
We are accustomed to golfing in a hot and humid climate.
2) Most courses close at 3:30,
so plan accordingly. We witnessed a very disappointed golfer who drove
a considerable distance, only to be surprised with the news that
the course was closed for maintenance. You will not see this closure
time mentioned on most golf literature. It's best to check ahead
with the golf course.

Check
out our favourite Algarve golf site, here,

Internet
Access, Lagos
With more and more travelers finding the need to keep in touch with family, friends and unfortunately the reality is "connecting with the office" ,
Internet Access is becoming a must for many. In response, Lagos
has several options available.
If you DO have a wireless device: Many cafes & restaurnts have free WiFi; so bring your laptop, Tablet, Blackberry, Android Phone, etc with you! We always do and have no issues finding a spot!! The Lagos McDonalds at the Sailboat/Fountain Roundabout also offers free WIFI.
If you DO NOT have a wireless device: Internet cafés around town offer
high-speed access. In general we have found the speed a little slower
than what we come to expect of high-speed in Canada. The Internet
cafes in Portugal continue to strive to improve their service.
Internet at Gélibar, Lagos
Features: High-speed access; multiple computers, printer (black-white); workstations are along one wall in tight quarters; casual café style setting in a friendly family run coffee shop; you can enjoy a coffee, a drink or a light snack while surfing; ceiling mounted TV to take in the football games. Other
Internet Options, Lagos
As you roam around the streets of Lagos, you
will come across several other options for internet access. We
have tried many of these: Some with older equipment; with varying
pricing; with high-speed access; with very low-speed access. In
most cases, these internet outlets are an add-on to a coffee shop

Marina de Lagos
If you are a visiting yachtsman, a local yachtsman or a wanna be yachtsman: You really want to know "Lagos Navigators".
They are an informal group of like-minded yachtsmen, helping each other to make the most of their stay in Lagos. They organize sporting, sailing, social, craft and technical activities over the 9-month winter season. I frequently receive emails from yachtsmen, looking for sailing related contacts. Well Lagos Navigators are your answer.

In Lagos Old Town: Lagos has
an abundance of pubs, bars, cafes and a karaoke pub with awesome
atmosphere. Most of these establishments are located in the old
historic town. We recommend walking around and finding the type
of place that suits your taste. It is a great way to see what's
current at the time of your visit, as it is not uncommon for places
to close down and new news spots to pop up from one year to another.
At the Marina: There are a great
little cafes to sit and have drinks; it is
more of a relaxing quiet place with great atmosphere.
Out of Town East: Horte 2 is
a popular disco (east on the EN125 between Lagos and Alvor)
Out of Town West - Sagres:
Sagres has a busy disco; don't know the name but just ask around;
be prepared to have loads of fun seekers around; plan to dance really
really close to the other patrons; great atmosphere if you are up
for it
Dromadario is great restaurant by day, on the main road in Sagres,
and a
bar by night
Tip: Discos only get going
around 1am.
